our martial arts programs
Kyuki-Do is a living, growing martial art that continues to expand and change. In addition to the core elements of Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Hapkido, Kyuki-Do also includes techniques from Jujitsu, Karate, boxing, wrestling, traditional weapons from Okinawa and the Philippines, and many other arts and styles.
Kyuki-Do is more than just an effective system of self defense; it is a martial art that encourages students to realize their own potential, both physically, mentally and spiritually. Students of Kyuki-Do learn discipline, self-control, patience, persistence and respect for themselves and others. Students are expected to continually strive to perfect themselves, both in the do jang, and in every other area of their life.
Pre-K KID’S PROGRAM
AKF Athens Martial Arts takes pride in its top notch preschool martial arts program. Our Pre Kyuki-Do class covers the same basic material as the regular classes, but is paced appropriately for younger students. Designed especially for children in the 3-6 age range, this fun, introductory martial arts class teaches very basic martial arts techniques through the medium of structured physical games. The primary focus of the class is on helping young children learn how to follow rules and be polite and respectful while still having fun. If your preschooler has some excess energy that needs to be burned off, this is the place for it!
Best of all, our Pre Kyuki-Do class is family friendly. Mom and dad are encouraged to get on the mat and take an active role in their little one’s martial arts training. After all, the family that kicks together, sticks together!
BASIC PROGRAM
The journey begins! The AKF Athens Basic Kyuki-Do Program creates a positive, challenging learning atmosphere for students with little to no previous martial arts experience. In the Basic Program you will learn Basic Kyuki-Do which includes stances, blocks, kicks and strikes, proper and safe falling techniques, and basic grab escapes. Each class will include physical conditioning where you will see improvement in coordination, strength and flexibility. The most important aspect of your training is our life skills curriculum where we learn respect, self-discipline, confidence and how to have a black belt attitude.
The Basic Program is a skill-based program that will lead you through the novice belts of Kyuki-Do, culminating in the rank of green stripe and preparing you for graduation into the more rigorous advanced Leadership Program.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
The journey continues! The AKF Athens Leadership Program is designed for students who have graduated from our Basic Program, or for students who want to begin their martial arts training with a more challenging and advanced regimen. The Leadership Program includes advanced Kyuki-Do which will take you to you black belt and beyond! In addition to unlimited weekly Kyuki-Do class you will also have the opportunity to participate in advanced topic seminars on Judo/Jujitsu, Hapkido, weapons and more. Leadership students are also eligible for enrollment in our Certified Instructor Training courses.
As a part of our leadership team will learn advanced self defense skills with a focus on throwing, trapping and locking techniques. There are several training tools you will be introduced to including the bo staff, nunchaku, sai and bokken which all help to develop strength and hand eye coordination.
Cross-Training PROGRAMS
Our Leadership Program also provides numerous additional training options, including unlimited cross-training in a variety of different arts. At present, our additional classes include:
Judo: Founded by Jigaro Kano in 1882, Judo is a Japanese art that focuses primarily on throwing and grappling techniques. AKF Judo classes employ traditional Kodokan Judo training methods and focus on judo as a way to enhance young adults’ and adults’ personal development, technical skills, and self-defense. While sport and competitive judo training is de-emphasized, students are provided a wide range of learning opportunities that reflect each individual’s goals.
Aikido: Created by Morihei Ueshiba in Japan, Aikido is a soft-style that teaches practitioners how to use, rather than oppose, the force of an attacker. Learn to meet attacks with relaxed, effective responses. Dependent on circular movement, it is very fluid and graceful with an emphasis on efficient body movement and timing. Strength and size are of little importance in the practice of Aikido, which makes it an excellent art for men and women.
Hapkido: Hapkido is a Korean art that derives from the same roots as Aikido, but incorporates more kicking and striking. It is composed of three primary skills: nonresistance against force, circular motion in countering and attacking, and absolute penetration of an opponent’s defense. Hapkido also utilizes a wide variety of devastating kicking techniques and strikes as well as a knowledge of grappling and pressure points. This art is a great complement to our other styles (especially Kyuki-Do and Aikido), and will help you develop practical self-defense techniques.

welcome to AKF Athens Martial Arts
AKF Athens Martial Arts is a traditional martial arts school. Not only do we teach usable physical skills and techniques, but we also emphasize the development and growth of the total individual.
We work to instill in our students such values and attributes as tolerance, serenity, self-discipline, self-confidence, and respect for others. Our black belt staff is dedicated to providing the finest possible instruction and guidance in order to produce students who, because of their mental and physical sense of well-being, find little need to rely on the use of physical force.
